A plug alone is a quick external fix pushed into the puncture — handy in an emergency but not a permanent seal. A patch is applied to the inside of the tire but doesn't fill the hole. The industry-recommended repair is a combination patch-plug: the tire is dismounted, inspected from the inside, and a single unit both fills the puncture channel and seals the inner liner. If a run-flat was driven on while flat — which is exactly what it's designed to let you do — the internal structure may already be compromised, and many run-flats can't be safely repaired once they've lost pressure. If it stays on after that, it can mean a low tire elsewhere or a sensor that was damaged by the puncture or by being driven flat.
